MOHAMMAD Ashraful’s century and half a ton by Tamin Iqbal inspired Bangladesh to an eight-wicket win over Zimbabwe in the Grameen phone Cup One Day International played at Queens Sports Club on Sunday.Bangladesh won the match with 15 overs to spare.The Tigers won the toss and opted to have Zimbabwe bat first. They went on to restrict Zimbabwe to 207 runs. Bangladesh played better than they did against Zimbabwe A on Friday.
Zimbabwe had themselves to blame as they bowled badly.Chamunorwa Chibhabha claimed the visitors’ first wicket of Zunaed Siddique with 21 runs after three overs.Elton Chigumbura took out Iqbal for the second wicket when Graeme Cremer caught the ball.
Iqbal went out with 63 runs having faced 68 balls and hitting seven boundaries.By the 25th over, it was clear that Bangladesh were on their way to victory as they stood at 167 runs for the loss of two wickets.Ashraful, not out managed 103 runs while Raqibul Hassan scored 11.
Mark Vermeulen marked his return to the national team with a fine display and top scoring for his team with 92 runs from 128 balls.Vermeulen who last played for the national team in 2004 when England toured Zimbabwe was lucky to stay long at the crease when Hossain dropped his ball in the 33rd over. Brandon Taylor and Chigumbura each scored 20 runs.Taylor was taken out by wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim after being bowled by Shakib Hassan.Hassan also took Chigumbura’s wicket.
Najmul Hossain claimed three wickets off Chibhabha (seven runs), Prosper Utseya (14) and Raymond price (11).Top order batsman Hamilton Masakadza went out for a duck in the first over just after three minutes on the crease.Man-of-the-match Ashraful claimed Charles Coventry’s wicket who had managed 19 runs.Mahmud Ullah got the wickets of Sean Williams (6) and Stewart Matsikinyeri (9).Bangladesh captain Hassan was happy with the win and said his team went into the match confident of a victory.“We have been playing good cricket in the past one-and-a-half months and my guys were confident because of the display in West Indies. We hope to do well in our next encounter,” said Hassan.
Zimbabwe’s captain Prosper Utseya conceded that the bowlers did not do well and said they would work hard in their next match.“We lost too many wickets and did not score more runs. The bowlers also did not do well. We still have a chance and we will work hard in our next game,” said Utseya.
