An upbeat Zimbabwe National Volleyball Women’s side has left for the 2010 Volleyball World Championships first round qualifiers to be run in Maputo from 20th to the 24th of this month.
The Women National Volleyball side departed for Maputo under immense pressure to emulate the good performance set by their male counterparts.
Although the national side last had a competitive competition of this magnitude in 2006 team Captain Ester Madeya who is one of the only two survivors of the 2006 national side believes the underdog tag attached to her side will work to their favor.
‘I know it’s a very new team and only me and Eunice Tsviura have played at this magnitude when we participated in the 2006 All Africa qualifiers, because of the fact that we are unknown I think that is our strength and we stand a good chance of making through to the next round in Algeria.
The girls know what it means to play at this level and we are more than ready to face any nation despite the fact that we know very little about all our opponents.’
Her sentiments were echoed by the ladies coach Godfrey Nyagura who however lamented the failure to have any international friendlies set up as part of preparations for the girls.
‘Their chances are fifty-fifty and although i would have loved to get them play friendly matches against sides like Zambia, Botswana and even the Mozambicans it was not possible because of financial restraints. However I have a strong feeling that they will do like the men did and qualify into the next round’ said the head coach.
The Zimbabwe women’s team opens their campaign with a tie against South Africa before facing Mozambique, Swaziland and finally Mauritius.
The women side must finish in the top-two for them to qualify for the next round which will be hosted in Algeria.
