PRIME MINISTER Morgan Tsvangirai mourns Sam Mutukudzi
PRIME MINISTER Morgan Tsvangirai travelled to Norton Tuesday night to personally convey his condolences to Oliver Mtukudzi and his family following the tragic death of their son Sam in the early hours of Monday morning.
“I wish to convey my heartfelt condolences to Oliver, his wife Daisy and the rest of the Mtukudzi family following the sad passing of Sam,” the Prime Minister said last night.
Sam, the 21 year old son of Zimbabwe’s legendary singer and icon, died together with his friend Owen Chimhare when the car they were travelling in crashed into a bridge along the Bulawayo- Harare highway early Monday morning.
Tsvangirai said Zimbabwe had been robbed of its musical future while the Mtukudzi family had “lost a beacon of hope and the music industry is all poorer”.
The two are due to be buried at Warren Hills Cemetery in Harare on Wednesday.
Sam Mtukudzi (21), the son of music legend Oliver Mtukudzi and Owen Chimhare (22) a sound engineer perished in an accident early on Monday morning.
Meanwhile, Robert Mugabe has sent a rare condolence message to the Mtukudzi and Chimhare families on the lose of their in a traffic accident.
In a condolence message to the Mtukudzi and Chimhare families yesterday, Robert Mugabe said Zimbabwe must value artistes’ contributions to defining “the soul of the nation”.
“This particular accident dramatises yet again the hazards always stalking our road users, more so the youthful ones. Our nation has been robbed of two youngsters of great promise and future in the music industry.
“For me personally, it has always been delightful to follow the musical career of the Mtukudzi family, a career which, through Sam and his sister Selma, appeared set to broaden and branch out in its graceful flourish.
“Alas this was not to be. Today, a vital shoot of that great musical tree stands broken, stumped and wilting.
“On behalf of the inclusive Government, my family and on my own behalf, I wish to express heartfelt condolences to the Mtukudzi family, especially Baba naAmai Mtukudzi and the Chimhare family on this very sad and heart-wrenching loss.
“Our nation joins them in mourning the departure of these two budding stars,” he said.
Mugabe added: “As we mourn their demise, we must, as a nation, take a moment to reflect and acknowledge the demanding role fulfilled by all artists — both living and departed — often with very limited means and prospects.
“They define the soul of our nation, inspiring it to greater personality and accomplishments.
“Today, they stand stricken for losing two of their own in this one tragic incident.”
The pair will be buried side by side at Warren Hills at 2pm on Wednesday
