Mozambique’s main opposition leader on Friday called Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe “a political criminal” and condemned power-sharing talks underway to resolve the country’s crisis.

“Mugabe used to be my hero, but now I consider him as a political criminal to the Zimbabweans who were denied the result of their choice in the recent elections,” Alfonso Dhlakama, head of the Renamo party, told reporters.

The 84-year-old Zimbabwean president, viewed as a liberation hero following a guerrilla war that led to his country’s independence in 1980, was re-elected in a June 27 run-off poll widely condemned as a sham.

Opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai boycotted the run-off despite finishing ahead of Mugabe in the March first round, citing rising violence against his supporters.

Power-sharing talks aimed at resolving the crisis, mediated by South African President Thabo Mbeki, began last month.

“The negotiations to solve the Zimbabwean political crisis were done in bad faith and it is a bad example to Africa and the whole world,” Dhlakama said.

“It encourages African leaders who lose elections to resort to robbing elections and rely on the solutions of their friends to continue to cling to power.”

Mozambique, which borders Zimbabwe, has been a traditional ally of Mugabe.

  2. Guerra says:

NHAMO. If my shona is still okay you sound like your name, Thats why your mom named you Nhamo.
If it is true that you were in the Zimbabwe forces during the Mocambican war then you are in a position to anwser my questions. let me correct you Matsanga is not Dhlakama’s nickname nor his movement’s name but the founder member of the movement( Andre Matate Matsangaise).Thinking like a Matsanga of course he is supposed to think like his late boss who inspired him to wage the war against the communism government of machel to bring what we call today a democratic Mocambique.
1)Would you please tell me if the zimbabwean force were the angels of war why did they killed innocent people in sena, gorongosa (mutove) where they burned a family of 7 mom uncle and five children incuding a 2years old babe?12/11/87.
Why did the Macomrades took our 3 lister engine ( iwas told a major Kunene stationed at Birchnough bridge (barracks) by the time benefited from our engines.
Why did the professional soldiers of Zimbabwe killed innocent people in Katanga (DRC) 1997 Matabeleland Zimbabwe 1981-1987 and a month ago in zimbabwe.
Nhamo your name is it not Nhamo?
In all his knowledge Jonathan Moyo does not want to be asked about the Gukurahundi; why? because he has got no answers to it. 5 brigade did commited genocide in Midlands and the Matabeleland.
Nhamo you are just a mere sldier used to kill people in the name of you hate Matsanga. Do you know why Mugabe was Dhlakama’s hero? Mugabe risked his life to meet with this man you call Alfonso (Afonso Macashu mariceta Dhlakama) in Malawi 21 months before the Rome peace accord.
Listen son Tsvangirai and the Mdc is your only hope for future in Zimbabwe.

  3. NHAMO says:

Nhamo means suffering to remind of your Shona, yes my mother gave me that name but iam not suffering, i don’t want to brag but i am successful, educated and rich you thought by being in the army i was an ordinary soldier, i was military doctor who took care of not Zimbabwean army personnel, but your Mocambican civilians too. As you know Matsanga was a popular name for Alfonso’s terrorists who caused a lot of suffering to that country, the records are well documented, you should not forget that Bob played a part in what you call democratic Mocambique of today, and you should be grateful for resources we donated and sacrifice our military went through, and you now trying to pay us with a scorn.I say no you cannot, you still have a very long way to get to where we are as Zimbabwe who has been in problems for the last ten years, but nevertheless we still going to unite for the common goal to claim back our true position as Africa’s jewel. The Mdc you talking about is Zimbabwean sons and daughters persuing the goals of democracy, with their fellow countrymen and women.Whats the sudden panick from our neighbours all of a sudden, the answer is simple what belongs to Zimbabwe is now going to Zimbabwe, you took advantage of our problems and grabbed what belonged or what was earmarked for our nation. This is over, Europeans, Asians, Americans and all the nations of interest know that Zimbabwe is the most friendly investment destination, tourist friendly, humble hardworking and educated nation. Therefore neighbour like you are trying to give an impression otherwise, but its furtile, the record was long set. Go tell your border police to stop robbing my fellow citizens who are trying to earn a living, of their money and wares, its barbaric and its a sign of no appreciation for the democracy and your independence we sustained with our blood and money. For your own information iam a true Ndau and my grandfather’s grave lies in Mocambican soil, my best friend is married to Mocambican woman and he is high ranking in Mdc, its a shame to hear the people we helped talking ill about us.I was not a mere soldier, i was a soldier who saved lives and even that of your kith and kins. Go tell Alfonso fresh blood is still in his hands. Proud to have saved in our military, retired, weathy and happy. DR NHAMO……., HARARE, ZIMBABWE

Your grandfathers grave is in Mocambique and Macomrade’s graves lies in our land, Are you an allien in Zimbabwe or a citizen? why is your grandad’s grave in Mocambique?

Rowland entered the Mozambican peace process in 1989 employing bluff and a vague agenda to persuade regional leaders that their adversaries were prepared to reach a settlement. Before long, a seemingly unlimited supply of money and the use of Lonrho’s aircraft to transport Renamo had helped to build up confidence and accelerate the pace of the peace process. Without Rowland’s assistance, the Rome talks might well have dragged on at additional financial and humanitarian cost. It is to his credit that, at the end of the day, Rowland was the only person Renamo leader Dhlakama trusted for advice. While Rowland’s initial involvement in the peace process undoubtedly stemmed from commercial self-interest, it appears that Rowland quickly became personally engaged in the search for a settlement. By 1992, the time and resources he was spending far exceeded anything he could hope to recoup commercially.
In December 1990, Rowland flew Dhlakama to Lusaka to meet Zambian President Kenneth Kaunda at the government guest-house. During their first meeting, Kaunda successfully urged Dhlakama to end the war and settle with Chissano in a face-to-face meeting. At a second consultation

Dr Suffering you can help the people of your country by providing food rather than to leave them in the hands of the Mozambicans Guarda frobnteira (Border guards) Do you think the Mocambican police crps are corrupt more than your Border Gezi lads? Behonest with yourself.
Who is taking advantage of who, my friend read history correctly what you call independence came through the blood of Zimbabweans and Mozambicans we can pay back what we owe you but you cannot pay back our lives we lost because of your independence.

  8. bobby says:

hello to all, i am a young student doing a degree in computer science. i am disappointed at the situation in zimbabwe and even more at the failure of africans to unite or work together as reflected by dr nhamo’s and mr guerra. it is not about riches or pointing blame people seem to miss the point and personally i think africa as a whole has got this concept of politics all wrong. we need to revisit our roots b4 politics, i am a true ndau and my grandma who is approximately in her late 90’s tells me stories of democracy, law and order within our own cultures , and how one would be able to travel to south africa , mozambique without any boarders and fear of persecution and the system had less crime. my point is education is a good thing but lets not get ahead of ourselves by thinking education brings wisdom it only aids to our creativity. the talks being held in zimbabwe clearly shows how twisted politicians in africa are (same applies to kenya) these talks are no longer about the people but about power and a share in government profits etc its all about money people die and get killed just for some people to sit and drink coffee together deciding your future. to cut the story short political leaders are not kings but more of employees of the people of that nation. take a look at the current American run between obama and mccain they are practically handing out like a C.V. in the form of the conventions etc and the people get to decide their own future and if their choice fails them they have ways of removing that president another good example is Pakistan though i not so sure they made the right decision by removing musharaf coz therez now kind of a power struggle. anyway my point is the power should belong to the people in zimbabwe they should decide their own future.

  9. Msebele moyo says:

    Mugabe was never my hero

Hey guys l dont think this guy was never my hero at all, when he came into power he murdered and l dont see a hero status being bestowed on a murderer for politcal expediency unless if that is the African way. If we had condemned this guy from the beginning like what the Zapu did then l dont think we will be in this catastrophe, we are suffering because of our own system. you people you say that this guys was you hero so let him be your hero and reap the benefits of trusting a hero bron in Zwimba. It pains me when l read the history of what happened just after the independence, many people who had fought the war in good faith in the name of the liberation of the country were incarcerated by the Mugabe regime which was predominantly shona people ( im not tribalist guys but just taking you a few miles back) The Shona people were chanting ‘Pasi naNkomo he must be hanged” What did you mean about that? Lukeout Masuku was murdered in prison do you know who killed him or should l ask you about who killed Tongogara and many other Shonas who were in the leadeership of Zanu, so where and when was this guy Mugabe a hero in his life. A person’s history makes him a bad guy or good guy so tell me about the good things that Mugabe did which were good.
