Harare – President Robert Mugabe’s nephew Leo Mugabe is embroiled in a messy divorce wrangle which has exposed that he owns multiple farms, against the spirit of the Global Political Agreement (GPA) which brought about the new unity government.
The unity government is has plans to carry out a land audit to deal with multi farm owners and ensure equitable land distribution.
Leo’s former wife, Veronica filed divorce papers in the Harare High Court that show that the couple owned at least three farms in Mhangura, Makonde and Banket. Veronica is claiming 100 percent ownership of one of the three farms and at least 50 percent ownership of another. She also wants livestock, machinery and furniture of all the three farms, Nangadza in Mhangura, Journey’s End in Makonde and another one in Banket.
Veronica is also seeking 50 percent of shareholding in Leo’s firms such as Telecel Zimbabwe, Stewarts and Lloyds, Integrated Engineering Group, steel dealer Baldwins Steel and Themiso Holdings Limited.
She is accusing her husband of abandoning his financial and parental responsibilities and is seeking custody of the children. She says their marriage has irretrievably broken down because Leo has denied her “love, respect, affection, companionship and friendship” that is expected between wife and husband.
Leo is a former chairman of the local soccer body, Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) before he was booted out for allegedly mis-using a soccer development grant from FIFA, the world’s soccer governing body.
He is also a political heavyweight in Zanu PF’s Mashonaland West, Mugabe’s home province and stronghold area.
