Late Vice President’s Son to Contest in Gutu North

Masvingo , June 03, 2010 – The late Vice President Simon Muzenda’s eldest son Tongai, has decided to follow daddy’s footsteps after declaring his interest to contest the Gutu North parliamentary seat on a Zanu (PF) ticket in the next elections.
Both President Robert Mugabe and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai hinted that elections may be held next year.
Tongai (34) said in a telephone interview that he was ready to take the challenge and battle it out with the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T) current Member of Parliament, Edmore Maramwidze Hamandishe, in a constituency once headed by his late father.
Mzenda died in September 2003.
“I have decided to carry on with the legacy left behind my father to work for the people. I am prepared to take the challenge,” he said.
However, it remains to be seen if Tongai has the political clout and if he will capitalise on the waning support base left behind by his father.It also remains to be seen if daddy’s shoes would not be difficult to fill for Tongai, who according to sources, is a political novice.
War veterans in the area were also said to be opposed to his candidature.
Eddison Zvobgo Jnr, son of late veteran nationalist and hero, Eddison Mudadirwa Zvobgo failed to make it after trying to follow his father’s political path in Masvingo. He failed to contest the Masvingo Central seat after losing in the Zanu (PF) primary elections to prominent businessman Edmund Mhere. Mhere lost the seat to MDC’s Jefferson Chitando in the 2008 harmonised elections.
