BARELY a month after inspiring Jomo Cosmos back into the South African Premiership, Zimbabwe international striker Evans Gwekwerere has moved to the Vietnamese top-flight league.
Gwekwerere has, according to reports from South Africa yesterday, secured a two-year contract with V-League club Hai Phong FC, where he has been on trial since last week.
The former Dynamos striker’s career had hit a bad patch when he struggled to find a club after failing to impress at Moroka Swallows.
Gwekwerere, however, found the kind of form that made him a hotshot at Dynamos when he signed for Jomo Cosmos in Division One.
The former Douglas Warriors forward yesterday told a top South African soccer magazine of his joy in moving to Vietnam.
“Everything went well. Hai Phong FC have given me a two-year contract,” Gwekwerere said.
Gwekwerere, who joined Cosmos from troubled FC AK last season, left Ezinkosi on a high after scoring the two goals that powered the team back into the Absa Premiership when they beat Carara Kicks 2-1 in the promotion play-offs recently.
The 24-year-old Zimbabwean international joined the South African Premiership in 2006/07 from Dynamos but failed to live up to expectations at Moroka Swallows owing to injury and loss of form.
He was eventually shipped out to FC AK where his progress was scuttled by the club’s financial crisis.
His new Vietnamese club are seventh in the ongoing V-League campaign.
Gwekwerere’s fellow Zimbabwe international Onismor Bhasera could also be on the move amid reports that two French top-flight clubs have expressed a huge interest in the Kaizer Chiefs left back.
Bhasera has enjoyed a fine spell at Naturena since joining Chiefs from Maritzburg United with his star continuing to rise with each passing season.
His game has also matured with the pressure that comes with playing for a big club.
Despite the Warriors having failed in their qualification bid for the 2010 World Cup and African Cup of Nations, Bhasera was one of the better players in the senior team and featured prominently for the side that was under the guidance of Brazilian coach Valinhos.
According to reports from South Africa, French clubs FC Sochaux-Montbeliard and Le Havre sent representatives to watch the talented left back in action for Amakhosi, as Chiefs are affectionately called by their legions of fans.
Should either side pursue their interests in the player, Bhasera, one of two Zimbabweans at Kaizer Chiefs together with veteran midfielder Tinashe Nengomasha, could break into the French Ligue 1 at the start of the 2009-2010 European season.
It would also be a dream move for Bhasera should he secure a deal to play in France.
It would be due reward for the former Harare United and Tembisa Classic defender whose talents have won the hearts of many Kaizer Chiefs fans.
Bhasera has made 63 appearances for Chiefs, during which he started in 62 of the games.
He made his debut for Amakhosi in their 2-0 away triumph over the now relegated Benoni Premier United on August 1, 2007.
