Coventry grabs backstroke gold for Zimbabwe

Kirsty Coventry has smashed the previous world record to take gold in the 200m backstroke at Beijing’s Water Cube today.

Coventry and American Margaret Hoelzer battled it out, both swimming under world record pace midway through the race.

Two thirds into the swim, Coventry drew a body’s length ahead of world record time. She hit the wall in 2 minutes 5.25 seconds.

Japan’s Reiko Nakamura swam into third position to take bronze with a 2 minutes 6.23s time.

Australians Meagan Nay and Belinda Hocking failed to make the top three.
