Charamba protests PM’s Newsletter

President Robert Mugabe’s spokesman George Charamba, has reacted angrily to Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai’s newsletter, saying it is a breach of his oath of secrecy.

Tsvangirai launched a free weekly newsletter last week to keep ordinary Zimbabweans informed of the goings-on in the unity government.

“What has happened to the oath of secrecy?” Charamba was quoted in the state-owned Sunday Mail as saying. “Does the PM expect President Mugabe to turn to the newsletter to know what is going on?”

The newspaper, loyal to President Robert Mugabe and Zanu-PF ministers, criticised the number of copies of the newsletter printed, reportedly 400,000.

“We have seen the publication … noted its circulation figures and we are looking at what the law says.” Charamba, has been waging a war against publicity favouring Tsvangirai.

Another former Mugabe propagandist, Jonathan Moyo, said: “What is shameful is that while civil servants are going without salaries … while farmers struggle to plant wheat and while peasants have been reduced to the life of hunter-gatherers, Americans are showering Tsvangirai’s office with precious US dollars to print and distribute neo-colonial propaganda on glossy paper.”
