Kirsty Coventry has smashed the previous world record to take gold in the 200m backstroke at Beijing’s Water Cube today.

Kirsty Conventry smashed the world record in the women’s 100 backstroke semifinals Monday, shaving 0.20 seconds off the previous record set by U.S swimmer Natalie Coughlin.

Kirsty Coventry followed up an impressive silver medal finish in the 400m individual medley Sunday with a near-record swim in the heats of the women’s 100m backstroke at the Beijing Olympics.
