HARARE, May 21 – Zimbabwe’s power-sharing government has resolved most disagreements but remains deadlocked on the appointments of the central bank governor and the attorney general, the prime minster said on Thursday.
Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai said the regional Southern African Development Community (SADC) would be approached to mediate over the disputed posts.
The posts of central bank chief, held by Gideon Gono, a Mugabe ally, and that of attorney general have been the most contentious issues facing the new unity government formed by President Robert Mugabe and Tsvangirai in February.
“In light of the above, and the fact that there is a deadlock on the status of the two individuals in question, the principals, with the support of our parties, will now refer this matter to SADC as the guarantors of the GPA (Global Political Agreement),” Tsvangirai told a news conference.
President Robert Mugabe, Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai and Deputy Prime Minister Arthur Mutambara have reached an agreement on some of the outstanding issues since the formation the country’s government of national unity.
According to well placed sources a statement on agreements reached and outstanding issues will be issued later on today (Thursday) by Mutambara.
The principals have reportedly agreed to share provincial governors and ambassadorship positions Mugabe has finally to allow MDC Treasurer General Sen.Roy Bennett to be sworn in as Agriculture deputy minister.
The three leaders have agreed to retain all the Permanent Secretaries while more appointments of Principal Directors mostly from the MDC-T structures will be announced soon.
New MDC-T associated Principal Directors were appointed — Vincent Gwaradzimba to Agritex, Agriculture, Mechanisation and Irrigation Development(MDC-T’s Secretary for Agriculture) and Elizabeth Marunda to Education, Sport, Arts and Culture(MDC-T’s Deputy Secretary for Policy and Research).
Still outstanding is the status of Reserve Bank Governor Gideon Gono and strongly ZANU PF associated Attorney General Johannes Tomana.
