Benjani admitted: I’d love to play for Pompey again.
The huge fans’ favourite has confessed he would be keen to put on a blue shirt once more amid speculation over his Manchester City future.

Benjani is one of a number of players expected to leave City this summer as Mark Hughes frees up space in his squad.

The 30-year-old finds himself well down the pecking order, with Carlos Tevez expected to follow Roque Santa Cruz into Eastlands, as owner Sheikh Mansour launches into a monumental spending spree.

Benjani is keen to fight for his place at City after suffering from a string of injury problems last season.

But he acknowledged things could change as the summer transfer merry-go-round speeds up.

Benjani is afforded hero status among Pompey fans for his plucky never-say-die performances following his £4.1m arrival from Auxerre in 2006.

The Zimbabwe international spoke of his ‘special relationship’ with the Fratton faithful.

And he left open the door for a return as he admitted he would be keen to play for them again.

Benjani said: ‘I have good memories and I have a special relationship with the Portsmouth supporters.

‘I left on a good note and I have nothing but good feelings about them, that’s for sure.

‘I’d love to play for them again, but at the moment I’m contracted to Manchester City.

‘I have a job to do here until I’m told anything else.

‘There is a lot of talk about my future, but at the moment I’m still a Manchester City player.

‘Obviously there is always speculation in football, though. I am happy to stay unless the club declare they do not want me anymore.

‘In football you never know what is around the corner.’

Benjani hit the ground running when he scored the winner on City debut against Manchester United after moving from Pompey in 2008.

But he found it tough going last season, starting just eight games in a stop-start campaign.

The likes of Fulham and Stoke are also keen on the striker, who admitted he is desperate to get regular first-team football.

Benjani said: ‘It’s been okay for me at Manchester City.

‘The problem I’ve had is the injuries I had last season, but everything is okay now. I’m ready to play and I need to play.

‘I’m training with the squad and we are about to fly out to Germany.

‘I have a contract at the moment and I just want to play football.’
