A SUMPTUOUS soccer meal awaits Bulawayo fans this weekend when CAPS United and Hwange visit the city. The two-course meal will be served at Barbourfields with Bantu Rovers welcoming Hwange on Saturday before the “main” meal of Highlanders and CAPS United at the same venue on Sunday.
Another good soccer meal would be at Luveve on Saturday where FC Windermere clash with second-placed Quelaton as the race for the Southern Region Division One Soccer League A hots up.But the biggest match of the weekend will be between four-time Premiership champions CAPS United and Highlanders who have won the league six times since 1993.
The Highlanders chairman, Themba Ndlela, yesterday said despite the lean spell, which has become a regular feature in recent years, morale was still high in the camp.”In terms of morale in the camp it is still high. The only worry in the camp is that we have not been winning and the many draws.
“Last Saturday we played well against Highway. We created a lot of chances in that match and it was the only other match after the Underhill and Black Rhinos matches that they have scored two goals,” said Ndlela.
The coaches were working hard with the strikers to ensure that there was a steady flow of goals. He said the forwards were still to adjust to football at this level since most did not play as many games last year.”Most of the strikers were not playing last year, they are learning and will soon be okay and when we turn into the second round, fans should expect more from them,” said Ndlela.
Long-time Chapungu goalkeeper Innocent Chogugudza has been re-appointed coach at the embattled airmen’s team.He has taken over from John Nyikadzino who was fired last week together with technical advisor Wellington Ngulube. The biggest losers could be Mimosa who were believed to be eager to land the signature of the former Lancashire Steel coach.
Chogugudza has watched most of his club’s recent matches. His return was with effect from Friday last week and he was in charge of the full training at Chapungu this week.
Chogugudza rose to the helm in June 2005 when Joseph Michaels was shown the exit door after a string of poor results. Two years later Chogugudza was fired and was replaced by Collins Mahara. Nyikadzino and Ngulube were to take over from Mahara last season but they failed to save Chapungu from relegation.
