ZIMBABWE TSVANGIRAIHARARE, May 31 (Reuters) – Zimbabwe’s MDC party on Sunday demanded the resignation of the central bank governor and attorney general, saying their continued tenure was sowing conflict and division in a new unity government.

President Robert Mugabe’s ZANU-PF and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai’s Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) formed a transitional government in February, but the parties are at odds over the fate of Central Bank Chief Gideon Gono and Attorney General Johannes Tomana, both Mugabe allies.

The MDC has been highly critical of the two men, blaming Gono for fuelling hyperinflation through printing money to shore up Mugabe’s past governments, while accusing Tomana of presiding over the prosecution of rights and opposition activists.

Mugabe last week said Gono would not go, but the issue has been referred to a regional body for arbitration.

Tendai Biti, the MDC secretary-general and finance minister, told journalists that about 1,000 party delegates attending an annual party conference had passed a resolution that Gono and Tomana resign.

“Conference calls that in the national interest, Johannes Tomana and Gideon Gono must resign forthwith,” Biti said.

“What this resolution is simply doing is to appeal to the conscience of the respective gentlemen, that in the national interest, they must consider their fate in employment in the government service.”

Tsvangirai had earlier told party members that failure to resolve outstanding issues would affect the credibility of the new government as Western countries continue to withhold critical funds, demanding more reforms.

Zimbabwe has suffered a decade of economic collapse and political tensions, but the formation of the new government has raised hopes of recovery.

The party, formed in September 1999, says hundreds of its members have been killed in political violence by ZANU-PF supporters and on Sunday said it would continue to mobilise for elections, expected once a new constitution has been written.

The MDC said some officials in the country’s security institutions had failed to adapt to the new political order.

Senior security officers, especially in the military, have in the past openly sided with Mugabe and vowed that Tsvangirai would never rule Zimbabwe.

“The transitional government must move urgently to ensure institutional and paradigm transformation in the remaining pockets of our state security agencies,” said Biti.

Good move by MDC, this is a good resolution. These fools should resign with them the country will not move forward and funding from the west will never flow. In the interest of the nation they should resign. Zimbabwe does not belong to the generals, mugabe, zanu and these two idiots. Please resign.

ana guseni this is a good move by mdc to do what.who listens to resolutions passed by a bunch of daydreamers ,called mdc.the only voices that these morons should listen to is the voices of the service chiefs our true liberators who have since seen sense in not saluting the balloonhead premier.hanzi gono must go so we can receive aid,its very futile for mdc to have utopia ideas of aid while we know the worst has no money to give.mdc think since they were functional as a part because of the aid they received they can also run the country on aid.get the san\tions gone, that is the outstanding issue.

Something needs to move. The political process seems stalled. Unless the GNU can Unlock international funds, ordinary Zims can’t expect to see their situation improve….What is wrong with pointing out the obvious.?

Security chiefs have reported to Mugabe that uniformed forces are disgruntled over the US$100.A good message for the military guys thats if you are not aware,as long as Gono and Tomana remains at the helm of the dictated positions, you can forget about an increase in that allowance.Tomana’s continued arrests of opposition members for tramped up charges and Gono’s abuse of foreign account of Donors and individuals has caused these fugitives to lose credebility in the legal and financial sector internationally respectively.Where these USDs comes from they have millions waiting to assist Zimbabwe if these two fugitives step down or removed otherwise.Food for thought uniformed guys!

Its true that Gono and Tomana must go, but the really is Mugabe does not want that to happen, and MDc Tsvangirai knows that for sure. So, why does Tsvangirai waste people’s time by promising them what he knows will never happen. He talked of governors going, now Mugabe refuse, and Chematama agrees while singing from a different tree. The ambassadors, Mugabe says they have know experience and Chematama agrees, but goes to tell the people a different story. Lets stop blaming Mugabe (ofcourse mugabe is the biggest obstacle) but our own Chematama Mbokodo is the biggest fool and flopper who sings a different song every day. I am neither MDC nor Zanu, because i think they are both going nowhere. but mbokodo is fast becoming a laughing stock. empty promises everyday and capitulating to Mugabe’s side everyday. He is fighting a loosing battle, instead of blaming Mugabe every day why cant you stand on your own word — people are tired of your flip -flopping.

The naivety of MDC-T is breathtaking. You think if you meet under a tree and decide that Gono must go then he will go. What have you conceded since you came. The sanctions which you asked for have not been reversed. infact you want them to dig deeper by removing Gono who resisted the sanctions. That is your biggest problem. like parrots you have all been taught to sing the song ‘ Gono must go’. My bet is you will get hoarse voices singing that song and we still wont budge.

Gono can stay coz cabinet has approved Biti to cut Gono s wings so Gono is not much of a problem. The real problem is attorney general Johannes Tomana who has denied political activists their freedom.
