Bekimpilo Nyoni is the new chairman of the Zimbabwe Soccer Coaches Association after beating Moses Chunga in polls held on Friday.
Nyoni polled 11 votes to Chunga’s two in a poll that was reduced to two candidates following the disqualification of Benedict Moyo.
The former Mighty Warriors coach was disqualified after revelations that Fifa had not cleared him to stand following a four year ban that was imposed on him in 2004.
Although the ban has since ended, Zifa chief executive Henrieta Rushwaya said they had written to Fifa to seek clarification on Moyo’s status but Fifa had not yet responded by the day of elections.
She produced a letter dated 17 February 2009 which read, “We are hereby requesting you confirmation on the lifting of the four-year ban for eight former Zifa Councillors whose ban ended on 16 August 2008. “Your advice on the request will be greatly appreciated.”
Mpilo takes over the chairmanship from Nelson Matongorere who stepped down following his appointment as Zifa technical director. An employee of the national federation is not allowed to hold a position within the ZSCA.
Nyoni, immediately after his election, declared that there were labour issues his association needed to tackle in order to protect coaches from abuse by their employers.
Andrew Kadengu was elected unopposed as vice chairman, while Alex Mafu polled 11 votes to Newsome Mutema’s one for the treasurer’s post.
The secretary general’s position went to Oscar Mazhambe who had 12 votes to Eric Aisam’s one while Prosper Kwenda had all the 13 votes in the bag for the post of organising secretary.
