Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe will form a new government “as soon as possible” and discussions are underway between his ruling ZANU-PF party and the main opposition, a cabinet minister said Thursday.
“The President is in the process of forming a new inclusive government,” Minister of Information and Publicity Siskhanyiso Ndlovu told a news conference.
“In the process of forming a government, we don’t put deadlines but it will be as soon as possible.”
Ndlovu said discussions between ZANU-PF and the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) were taking place but refused to divulge details.
“We can’t reveal what communications are taking place. We will let you know the results of the communications,” he said.
The party’s plans to push ahead with a new government come after MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai rejected a regional proposal at the weekend to set up a new government and share the disputed home affairs ministry with Mugabe.
“The formation of the new inclusive government is a big victory for the people of Zimbabwe and not for any particular party or individual,” Ndlovu said.
He also called on the United States and the European Union to lift sanctions on Mugabe’s ruling elite saying they were hurting ordinary citizens.
Ndlovu had said Wednesday: “President Mugabe is going to implement the SADC resolution. We must form an inclusive government… The president is going to invite the MDC to submit names of its would-be ministers. It’s premature to say they’ve refused.”
Zimbabwe’s three political rivals signed an agreement on September 15 to form a power-sharing government aimed at tackling the country’s economic and political crises.
But the formation of the new government has been delayed by bickering over the share-out of key ministries.
The political feuding has dashed the hopes of ordinary Zimbabweans that their daily struggle for survival could ease.
With inflation running at more than 231 million percent, half of the population requires emergency food aid, while a breakdown in basic services has led to deadly outbreaks of cholera in Harare.
Western nations have said they are ready to release hundreds of millions of dollars in aid, but not while Mugabe retains his sole grip on power.

Mugabe, with all his degrees, has missed a significant issue that will be his downfall …. CHOLERA has no political bias.
Next week the death rate will leap to a hundred thousand. By December it will be half a million, and by January a million plus. And ZanuPF will not be spared.

mugabe if MDC is not composed of intelligent people why is zanu having sleepless nights and not going ahead and form a government in a rush as they always do. I respect MDC officials they are respectable leaders which is one thing zanu officials lack. 9 out 10 Zimbabweans hate mugabe and zanu and why are they still instisting on being leaders when the electorate voted otherwise and hate them.

please people stop going on about Joshua nkomo. He was a war hero who did what was best for zimbabwe. He signed the unity agreement and not a single soul mourned about it at the time. We had the greatest days of our independence up until the sanctions and morgan partly because of nkomo. Why then do you all want to make out that nkomo was a fool? He was a head of state as deputy president. We had the most peaceful country in the world because of his ability to understand issues. This is because he was a true war hero and always wanted what was best for zimbabwe.
Morgan is nowhere near that- he is a fool and a puppet and ndebeles should not accept the fact that people are now comparing morgan to Nkomo. There is no comparison because nkomo wins hands down. The deal he signed is not the same as the one ugly morgan signed.morgan signed **** he did not even understand. We need more leaders like Johua Nkomo who only did what was right for zimbabwe’s people.
Ndebeles should not buy into this nonsense that says nkomo signed a bad deal…in what way? If he did then why did you not rise up? It means either the supporters were stupid or joshua was a fool. I dont agree or subscribe to the theory that Joshua signed a bad deal. He was not forced by SADC.
Mandewere munoti chi nenyaya iyi? Dont let these fools insult your leader even though he is no longer with us. Nkomo was a zimbabwe hero.
