Barack Obama came up a big winner in the presidential race in Dixville Notch and Hart’s Location, N.H., where tradition of having the first Election Day ballots tallied lives on.

Democrat Obama defeated Republican John McCain by a count of 15 to 6 in Dixville Notch, where a loud whoop accompanied the announcement in Tuesday’s first minutes. The town of Hart’s Location reported 17 votes for Obama, 10 for McCain and two for write-in Ron Paul. Independent Ralph Nader was on both towns’ ballots but got no votes.

“I’m not going to say I wasn’t surprised,” said Obama supporter Tanner Nelson Tillotson, whose name was drawn from a bowl to make him Dixville Notch’s first voter.

With 115 residents between them, Dixville Notch and Hart’s Location get every eligible voter to the polls beginning at midnight on Election Day. Between them, the towns have been enjoying their first-vote status since 1948.

Dixville Notch, nestled in a mountain pass 1,800 feet up and about halfway between the White Mountain National Forest and the Canadian border, followed suit in 1960, when John F. Kennedy beat Richard M. Nixon. Nixon, the Republican, swept all nine votes cast in Dixville that year, and before Tuesday, the town had gone for a Democrat only once since then. That was in 1968, when the tally was Democrat Hubert Humphrey eight, Nixon four.

Zimbabwe’s opposition endorses Obama

Over the weekend the Secretary General of the Movement for Democratic Change(MDC), Tendai Biti broke tradition and endorsed Democrat Barack Obama for United States President, saying “Once in a while, God donates individuals of such exceptional talent that you can only thank the Almighty that you breathe the same air with them. Barack Obama is that rare breed!”

Mr Biti, the MDC Chief Strategist and a Parliamentarian,in an Opinion article published on Metro wrote that the American election is no longer a domestic affair “For reasons that are as clear as pike stuff, this election is no longer a strict private American election. It is a world election”, wrote Biti.

The MDC Policy Co-ordinator General, Eddie Cross last month also publicly expressed his support for the first African American nominee for a major party “I support him because he has African roots but also because he embodies everything that the American dream stands for. That a poor, mixed race kid with a single mom can rise out of obscurity and claim the leadership of the most powerful country on earth.”

Mr.Cross,MDC-Bulawayo South., further wrote that “We have a common heritage with Obama – we represent the dreams and aspirations of our people, we represent the hope of a better, more just and equitable future. It is an opportunity and a responsibility and one that we dare not fail in.”

Biti and Cross join a list of other international politicians who have endorsed the Democratic Party ‘s nominee. Last month the mayor of London, added his voice in endorsing Obama for president.

Mayor Boris Johnson a member of the center-right Conservative Party that is a traditional ally of U.S. Republicans, said then Obama “visibly incarnates change and hope, at a time when America desperately needs both.”

Following the disputed Presidential run-off election Obama called MDC President Morgan Tsvangirai and shared his deep concern for the way MDC supporters were being targeted by President Mugabe’s militia.

According to sources Obama also expressed his admiration for Tsvangirai’s efforts to ensure that the will of the Zimbabwean people is respected. The Democratic Party nominee demanded US and African act on the crisis in Zimbabwe.

    Harare’s cholera outbreak worsens
    By Tangai Chipangura in Harare

    Print article
    email story

THE cholera outbreak in Harare continues to spread unabated and authorities appear at a loss as to how to manage the crisis with patients being admitted outside hospital, receiving treatment under trees.

When on Sunday morning, this reporter visited Beatrice Infectious Diseases’ Hospital which government has set aside strictly for cholera treatment, several patients, most of them vomiting, writhing and groaning in pain, were being treated under trees outside the hospital.

Some lay on makeshift beds while others were on mattresses right on the ground. Most of them were receiving rehydration solution in drips, but the drips hung from tree branches, depicting a scene a far cry from what one would expect of a big capital city hospital.

Security guards manning the premises refused to have pictures of the scene taken saying this reporter needed specific written permission from the Ministry of Health and Child Welfare to bring a camera onto the premises.

A senior nurse at the hospital however later spoke on condition of anonymity and said the hospital had been forced to treat patients outside because the three wards reserved for cholera cases were all full.

“The situation here is very depressing. Besides having to treat patients outside as you have seen, we are also fast running out of medicines. Yet the number of people that continue to come for treatment swells by the hour. We are facing a disaster. The likelihood of the disease spreading to other sections of the hospital is frightfully real,” said the nurse.

The nurse confided that more than a dozen people had died at the hospital in the past three days but the hospital had instructions not to cause panic by providing the correct statistics, especially to the press.

The state media has reported only six deaths from cholera.

The Harare City Council which runs the hospital cleared three wards of tuberculosis patients to create room for victims of the cholera outbreak. The wards have a collective capacity of 95 but they filled up inside a week.

Some relatives who had brought their sick to the hospital expressed fear their relatives would not survive given the conditions at the hospital and the apparent shortage of staff and medicines.

“I have seen nine dead bodies taken away in the two days that I have been here with my cousin… There are very few nurses in sight. We are told most of them are on strike. Now we are also told there are not enough medicines.

“It is frightening but it appears the authorities do not care because they continue to lie in the newspapers and television that everything is under control,” said an angry Albert Takavarasha whose cousin was in a critical state at the hospital.

Cholera, a preventable and curable disease, has killed more than 20 people in one Harare suburb of Budiriro where the outbreak was reported seven days ago. Government has however claimed only six people had succumbed to the disease and that measures were being put in place to curb the spread of the disease and to treat the infected.

A visit to the suburb at the weekend however revealed that there was still no running water in the suburb where residents have been drinking water from contaminated shallow wells for several months now.

We came across three funeral wakes for victims of cholera in Budiriro. People were visibly shaken and afraid. Many who had gone to the local clinic to collect water treatment tables had returned empty handed after the clinic had run out of supplies.

Some non-governmental organizations have been dispensing water treatment tablets for use by hundreds of residents who rely on wells for their water.

The Zimbabwe National Water Authority (Zinwa) has failed to restore water supplies to Budiriro and several other suburbs because of lack of financial resources owing to the country’s collapsed economy.

Health and Child Welfare Minister Dr David Parirenyatwa has on several occasions promised the nation that his ministry was on top of the situation and that the outbreak would be contained.

Instead, the cholera, which broke out in Chitungwiza about six weeks ago, has spread to other suburbs of Epworth, Mabvuku, Tafara and now Budiriro and Glen View, while Parirenyatwa kept urging people not to shake hands at funerals to avoid the spread of the disease.

A total of no less than 100 people have died from cholera in less than two months in the capital and its dormitory town of Chitungwiza.

Chairman of the Zimbabwe Association of Doctors for Human Rights, Dr Douglas Gwatidzo, confirmed to a local independent weekly that all major referral hospitals in the country had closed down because of the strike by doctors and nurses and also a shortage of medicines.

He said it was important that government owned up and came in the open to admit its total failure to run the country’s health delivery system so that international assistance could come in quickly to save lives.

“Many people will continue to die if the Minister of Health doesn’t tell the truth about the crisis at hand,” Gwatidzo is quoted as saying. “We urge government to reconsider its position and declare an emergency in the health sector so that many deaths will be avoided.”

you mdc baboons should just shut up shop and go to sleep. You have failed to bring down a gvt that is reeling under sanctions. You have failed to come up with credible policies that would bring about change to our country. You have signed a deal that was ****ed up-you have put your support on obama yet george bush gave you his support-what will mcgee think-that slave .He has lived in america all that time but has failed to bring about change for his people .It has taken a kenyan to bring about change to americans whether he wins tonite or not. He has done more than these slaves like mcgee and frasier.

What does it take for the mdc to win power? They have no plan-no strategy-just walk blindly into the next day. Why sign a deal and then talk about gukurahundi after signing? Does he think the ndebeles are foolish? I hope they are not that foolish. Why did they not pressure morgan to include gukurahundi in the talks? Either morgan is foolish or the ndebels are? Please let me know who the foolish party is?

Barak 15- mccain 6 first result-change is on the way.But let me warn my friend obama that these devils will do anything to derail his victory and should they do that i think there will be widespread chaos unless obama is declared winner.watch out for spoilt ballots etc -or people turning out to vote the next day when voting is over.I wish you well mr obama but keep your eyes and ears open.

Despite some of these fools trying to assassinate you, you did not cry about it but just carried on like a fearless warrior. In zimbabwe we had some cry about attempts to assassinate them and they even stopped campaigning because they are cowards. They had stopped in joza because magwara. you have shown great courage and as such you are capable of being commander in chief. In zimbabwe some want us to have a commander in chief who is a well known coward-has no o levels -is a puppet and thinks white people are more superior. He does not put the country first -he supports sanctions against his own people…what a baboon this morgan fellow is-i hope when you win you can talk directly with our president since you are both educated and try to resolve our issues.Mugabe finds it difficult to negotiate woth morgan because he is uneducated. This is a fact mr obama.

You can list all those issues but we know that its only because of sanctions that we are in this position today..they are a big part of our problems whether you like it or not.So all you bunch of mdc losers just get the **** out of my sight…

Zimbabwe postal service has introduced a new stamp with a picture of Robert Mugabe in honor of his achievements.

In daily use it has been shown that the stamp is not sticking to envelopes.

This has enraged the president who demanded a full investigation.

After a month of testing, a special presidential commission has come out with the following findings:

    1. The stamp is in perfect order.
    2. There is nothing wrong with the applied adhesive.
    3. People are just spitting on the wrong side. Where his picture is coz they hate him

The white majority will soon be voting Obama into the Whitehouse.

If the South African black majority could similarly drop their racist pasts and vote Helen Zille into the Presidency next year, Zimbabweans would have the best ally to support their rights to honest democracy.
