Embattled Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe governor Gideon Gono says he will step down at the end of his term next month and will not seek to be re-appointed.
“I know one thing for certain, this governor shall not serve one day longer than he is allowed by his principals,”Gono told delegates to the just-ended Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries (CZI) congress.
MDC secretary general Tendai Biti who is highly tipped to take over as Minister of Finance in the new all inclusive government early this year blamed Gono for Zimbabwe’s economic woes.
“Gono is the number one enemy of this country, not inflation,” Biti,MDC-Harare East said. “He has been stoking the fires of inflation through quasi-fiscal activities.
Banker and senior MDC official Elton Mangoma who could be appointed Minister of Economic Planning and Investment Promotion is a vocal critic of the central bank chief and called Gono’s recent monetary policy statement, inconsequential “tinkering” with the symptoms of the problem.
Sources speculated that Gono will likely be replaced by deputy governor, Edward Mashiringwani as acting governor until a suitable replacement is found.
The theme for this year’s CZI congress was “Economic Policy, Industrialisation, Agriculture, Economic Policies and Infrastructure Development”.
“CZI believes in the free enterprise system and with strong, well focused policies, as the only way of restoring viability and the return to the economic growth path, hence the objective is to use this congress to come up with strategies and concrete policy proposals on industrialisation, agriculture, economic policies and infrastructure development,” the CZI said in a statement announcing the congress dates last week.

At least one good news from Zim metro i also read the story in the Herald. Interesting the herald says he did some good things by helping some ministries and they also mention food parcels and that he helped the economy from complete collapsy, what bull. There is no economy in Zim it collapsed way back. This means the Herald does not know what they are talking about.Thanks God they can at least se it collapsing.I think its the only issue of Herald that does not talk about Morgan for a change, things are really changing for worse or better then its for us to judge.My friend was in Zim the other day and he was telling me that you find elders crying because of hunger let alone children. Any governor who can keep the economy ticking the way he did under these sanctions has my support. Hello all, This is one heated debate. An outside view, if it may be permitted. Giving people a bucketing is fun, but does not feed the kids. Plant food now, may I suggest? Everyone, everywhere, and in as wide a variety of food types as possible. On footpaths, on vacant land, on roofs, if you have to. Sprouts first, then veggies, then food trees. Neglected food trees, if fertilised and watered, can sometimes give the quickest food. I was a guest in Zim years back, fine country, very fine people, just lots of bad advice. Gotta eat first. Time to take off the tie and get the hoe working? Have been growing much of my food for 20 years now, also planting food trees along all the public roads here. Have asked the PM here to send aid food, seed and fertiliser, maybe, but don’t hold your breath. We prefer, as a nation, to spend our money killing the citizens of Afghanistan, though we can’t remember why.
Good luck all, and try stay peaceful. Scrapping will only make this worse, see history. Can’t send you food myself, sorry, but am trying to get food and treated seed parcels sent from all over the world, to the Zim post offices, for the workers there first, then for whoever. PS 1) Bone ash is 10 percent phosphorus, essential for fertiliser, and 2) muslin or other very fine cloth will filter out cholera bacteria, which are large. (1-5 microns) If no fine cloth, can use most roadside clay with 10 percent crushed charcoal included to make small filter pots in an ordinary fire. That will filter the bacteria out. Some effort will probably protect your family. Tell the neighbours.
