Moyo who is Ndebele is the ruling Botswana Democratic Party Member of Parliament for Tate East his constituency covers the area alongside Botswana-Zimbabwe boarder and mostly consists of a mixture of Ndebele,Kalanga and Motswana tribes.
Moyo was appointed by President Khama in April this year and political analysts were quick to point out that the development puts a damper on the Zimbabwean government of Robert Mugabe’s accusation that the Botswana government is xenophobic against Zimbabweans.
Early this year Botswana President Ian Khama joked at a meeting of his party the BDP that Moyo should go to Zimbabwe to vote, “Kwa o tlholegang teng, go tlhopha ka March 29-where you originate to participate in the March 29 elections”. “Moyo ke Motebele o tshwanetse go ya kwa ga bone – Moyo is a Ndebele and has to go home.”
The outspoken MP a few years ago complained that his Ndebele language is not used on national radio and television,he was debating a Draft Botswana Broadcasting Policy in Parliament.
Botswana is regarded by most economists as one of Africa’s major success stories. The country’s economy was dependent almost entirely on livestock production until the 1970s, when it became an important exporter of diamonds and other minerals.
Then, the government adopted a conservative investment policy, actively sought foreign capital for investments in crop agriculture, tourism, and secondary industries. The rapid growth in diamond production helped Botswana achieve average high economic growth. The country has the highest economic growth rate in the world.
On the other hand Zimbabwe’s economy is in free fall with inflation of 231 million per cent, a shortage of most basic goods and looming mass malnutrition.
In an unrelated development the Botswana government has said it only recognize President Robert Mugabe as long as the power-sharing deal remains intact.
“We will continue to encourage the parties to work together to reach an agreement. I don’t think it would be proper for us to say that we don’t recognise Mugabe simply because the parties are taking too long to reach an agreement,” said Foreign Affairs minister, Phandu Skelemani.
Apart from the writer’s say so, there is nothing substantive proving the Botswana deputy finance minister Samson Moyo is originally a Zimbabwean as this article is titled.
Not that there is anything wrong with being originally Zimbabwean but surely president Khama’s jest with the honourable member or being a Ndebele as stated does not restrict one to the geographical origins of the majority of those who speak the same language.
I will not waste space expounding on this but suffice it to say more tangible proof used to “establish” his original nationallity as alleged would have done better justice to the title and with that ceased being patronising to readers’ knowledge of nationality, ethnicity and domicile matters.

Zim soldiers beg villagers for food

AS politicians pontificate and bicker over cabinet posts Zimbabwe’s comatose economy has over the month deteriorated to dreadful proportions.
Widespread starvation has over the past two weeks driven soldiers from the barracks into villages where they beg and or rob food from hungry poor peasants.
Following a tip-off last week we took a trip at the weekend to Magunje communal lands in Hurungwe district of Mashonaland West Province, some 260 km North-West of Harare where villagers told sad stories of how hungry soldiers from 2:3 Infantry Battalion based at Magunje Barracks raided them for food every night since three weeks ago.
On arrival in Karoi, the provincial town, we started getting information confirming reports we had received from Harare about soldiers having turned to villagers for food.
People we spoke to in Karoi had come to town from Magunje communal areas and some were proceeding to Harare.
Ambuya Mutomba, an elderly woman around her 60s had Sunday morning travelled to Karoi from Magunje and was in the company of one of her grandsons Richard. They had come to town in the hope of finding some maize meal. They had found nothing in the four hours they had been in Karoi and were waiting for transport to take them back to the village.
“It is dangerous to talk to people we do not know about issues that you are asking about. But if you are going to put my life in danger because I tell you the truth, then God be with you,” said Ambuya Mutomba as she began her story.
In her village, soldiers had been coming at night, waking up individual families and asking them for food. The soldiers did not beat up people, she said, but they insisted on having food cooked for them.
“They say they will not go away without eating. They will sit there and we end up taking whatever food there maybe for the children and cook for them. We do not know what is happening but it is frightening.
“But these boys are not lying when they say they are hungry because one can tell by the manner in which they devour whatever food you give them. Is our government failing to feed its soldiers? Are we expected to feed the soldiers when we are also starving? We are getting occasional handouts from NGOs which come from Harare but that is the same little food these soldiers want to share with us,” Ambuya Mutomba complained.
Robson Tembo (not his real name) was at Magunje Growth Point when we arrived. He said he was planning to flee from his village with his family because the soldiers were becoming violent if they failed to get food.
He would not have his real identity published out of fear for his life.
“It all began about three weeks ago when we started getting night visits by uniformed soldiers based at the nearby barracks. They move in groups of two or three and they have their faces disguised with black soot and mud.
“The visits start from around 22:00 hrs until around 04:00 O’clock in the morning. At first we thought political violence had started again but the soldiers were not aggressive. It is their requests that baffled us. They were asking for food from us when we are also starving and do not have any food for our families,” related Tembo.
He said the soldiers would knock on their doors and on being let in they asked for the family to cook anything edible for them. Even though they did not really demand, villagers who have just been through a wave of political violence are threatened by the army fatigue and they silently comply.
Tembo said the soldiers started arriving late into the night when most families had retired to bed and fires were long put out. So they had to wake up and start making fire and scrounge around for whatever little food may have been left for the following day.
Tembo’s wife Grace chipped in: “What makes it even worse is that these soldiers move in different groups and arrive at different times. Sometimes we are woken up three times in one night by different groups of soldiers, all of them demanding food, saying they are very hungry. Crispen Mada (not his real name) who comes from a different village in the same district said in his village the soldiers who came there brought with them stolen property from the barracks which they bartered with food with the villagers.
“They brought especially blankets and garden tools which they offered us in exchange for food. Even for just one meal of sadza (pap) and vegetables they offered whatever they would have brought. They were not being violent at all, instead they were begging for us to cook for them. But all they same they knew we would not refuse because we were afraid of them. If they were not soldiers we would not agree to offer the little food we have for anything because as it is, after we feed them, we would remain with nothing for our children,”
Apparently, said Mada, word had reached the commanders at the barracks and there have been raids by the army looking for such items like blankets or other material that may have originated from the barracks.
“Many people are now throwing away the blankets and other things the soldiers would have brought. We do not know if the searches are official or perhaps it’s the same soldiers who want to take away what they would have given to the villagers in exchange for food. But people are afraid because the people who are conducting these searches are not as friendly as the night soldiers.
We tried to get official comment from army spokesperson Lieutenant Simon Tsatsi but his telephone numbers were unreachable. An officer who answered the land line was not cooperative and wanted to know what this writer was doing prying in army business.
“What were you doing there (at Magunje)? You should be careful about meddling in army business. Soldiers are supposed to get food at their barracks and not this thing you are trying to make up,” said the officer who would not reveal his identity. Sources within the army however confirmed there was hunger in the barracks and that the little food supplies that the army procured was given to the Army Staff College and at the army headquarters.
“Soldiers out at the barracks in the provinces are really going hungry. There is very little food getting there because of the crisis our country is going through. Even here in the capital, most soldiers that normally stay in the barracks are being sent on leave because there are no more food rations to give them,” confided one soldier based at KGVI army headquarters in Harare.
