UPDATE: United Nations human rights expert Manfred Nowak was deported from Zimbabwe on Thursday after being detained by security officials on arrival overnight, a U.N. official said.

“We are boarding the plane to Johannesburg now,” the official said by mobile phone from Harare airport.

Nowak said he had been invited to Zimbabwe by Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai whose power-sharing deal with President Robert Mugabe is under severe strain.

HARARE, Oct 28 – United Nations human rights expert Manfred Nowak was detained at Harare airport on Wednesday by Zimbabwean security agents and he may be deported to South Africa on Thursday, airport security told Reuters.

Zimbabwe earlier barred at the last minute a week-long visit by Nowak who had been invited to the country by the government, the United Nations said on Wednesday.

The Austrian academic was only told his visit had been postponed as he arrived in Johannesburg on his way to Zimbabwe where his fact-finding mission was set for Oct. 28-Nov. 4.

The invitation marked the first time that Zimbabwe had offered to open up to an expert working for the U.N. Human Rights Council. Nowak is the Council’s special rapporteur on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment.

Before the independence of Zimbabwe, these guys did put Mugabe and company on the world map. Smith could not slaughter Mugabe and his coleagues in prison because of international limelight that Mugabe had gained in the 70s. The same guys are saying we can help Zimbabwe something is wrong. UN has no evil intentions. What do say Abel? If you close doors to important visitors you are saying you have skeletons in the cupboard.

You must understand that this UN chap was told while still on SA soil that he was no longer welcome and therefore should not come, which is within the rights of the gvt.But he went on to board a plane to Harare. Now remember than Zanu pf are in defensive mode and view this as an act of contempt and will therefore just want to show the guy who is boss.Sovereignty and territorial integrity, the old man calls it.
Anyhow I dont think its correct to invite people and cancel they trips at short notice. It just creates unnecessary animosity, especially with a body like UN which is still predominantly on our side despite all the international media hype.

Abel you amaze me. You seem to be as insane as George Charamba. Thats why sometimes I cant help it but think that you are either George Charamba Caesar Zvayi or Mabasa Sasa of the Herald. One thing that Abel seems to forget is that the “government” of Zimbabwe is the inclusive government which has 3 main principals Mugabe ,Tsvangirai and Mutambara as leaders. Executive authority vests in Mugabe and Tsvangira and Cabinet. Thats what the agreement says. If George Charamba bars a UN visitor, he is speaking for himself and not inclusive government. Thats why we are saying this animal called GNU must die now because it was abused by ZANU(PF) from the beginning. It is ZANU(PF) policy which you Abel says government policy without shame. Tsvangirai never barred the UN chap and who does ZANU(PF) think they are after losing elections and after killing people? They get sympathy and confuse it with support. Instead of JOC being tried at the Hague they are given a chance to govern and spoil. Now that Tsvangirai is pulling out, we want to see where ZANU(PF) will take the country. This is the right chance for Zimbabweans. There will be free and fair elections whether Mugabe likes it or not. There is no government outside GNU take it from me. All the system will collapse in a month and Mugabe will have no option this time. He chased around Tsvangirai for 9 solid months pursuading him to join the government. If Mugabe wanted to go it alone as he waffles this time, why didnt he do then. What has changed now? Dream dream Abel. Time is ticking.

They probably realised it was a bad idea now that the MDC is in government, normally they would have taken the “expert” where they wanted to take him, introduced him to the people they wanted him to talk to and controlled his movements until his “fact-finding mission” was a nullity. But now that the MDC is in government as well he would have insisted on hearing the MDC side of things as well and that would have exposed Zanu heavily.

It’s not a good look though for Zimbabwe you can only embarrass bodies like the UN for so long, I have a strong feeling however that the wheels are off the Zim wagon now and we are headed straight to a mix of Sierra Leone/Myannmar/Darfur/Iraq
